Most building codes specify a minimum thickness for polyethylene moisture barriers used in construction. The BOCA National Building Code 1813.3.1.1, which deals with floor damp-proofing materials, states that:

"Where installed beneath the slab, damp proofing shall consist of not less than 6-mil. (.006 inch: 152 um) polyethylene with joints lapped not less than six inches (152 um), or other approved methods or materials. Where permitted to be installed on top of the slab, damp proofing shall consist of mopped on bitumen, not less than 4-mil (.004 inch: 102 um)polyethylene....."

To be confident that the film you select meets these code requirements, look for the CAFMA seal.
